The Perfect Vintage Clutch Bag

20 06 2009

bannerfan1clut1I’ve acquired a cute selection of vintage 80’s clutch bags recently.  I do love a clutch bag and if you’ve collected a few nice ones over the years, you’ll appreciate how great they are for adding that finishing touch to an outfit.  If you ever feel the need to indulge your fantasy for an expensive-looking, fun fashion accessory, get a clutch bag – or three!

When searching for the perfect clutch, always look to vintage first!  There’s so many styles and forms to choose from and there’s something to suit every budget.  There’s plenty of vintage eras to choose from.  Handbags first became popular in the late 18th century, when women began carrying reticules, the forerunner of the modern handbag and looking very much like some styles of the clutch bag you find today.  They were popular during this period because of the narrowing of gown styles which prevented the installation of pockets.  Young ladies would use reticules to carry their handkerchief, smelling salts and a packet of rice papers (used to dull a shiny patch on the face).

Clutch bags went out of fashion in the early 19th century, but experienced a resurgence in popularity during the 1930’s and also during World War II.  With rationing, the smaller clutch required less material for manufacture and this fitted in well with the wartime mindset.

The clutch went through another surge of popularity in the 1980’s.  It was now available in many colours and with matching shoes!

Today, the clutch remains popular as an evening bag.  With the modern woman’s lifestyle requiring her to carry phone, keys, calculator and other assorted necessities, it’s not a common bag for everyday use.  However, you only need open the latest fashion glossy to see how popular the clutch bag still is.

So, when you need a bag just for the necessities, remember the faithful clutch bag.  You’re guaranteed to add some instant pazzaz to your wardrobe without splashing out too much cash.  And, if you’re looking to start your very own vintage collection, where better to start than a lovely vintage clutch?

Catwalk Creative Vintage Clothes Party

12 06 2009

bannerfan1I’m really looking forward to this coming Sunday.  I’m hosting a vintage clothes party and I can’t wait!  A couple of my girlfriends had hinted a while back that they’d love an afternoon of ‘elegant slumming‘ with pals, frocks and a glass or two of chilled wine.  Who am I to argue?

Four clothes rails packed with vintage goodness!

First I had to clear out the lounge of all my daughter’s favourite toys.  No small feat I can tell you.  Our lounge area is around 23 ft long so there’s plenty of space for everything, apart from rails full of clothes that is!  Initially I thought I could manage by discreetly hiding away a few toys here and there.  However, it just wasn’t working and so the toys had to go!

My plan was to transform the lounge and give it a cosy vintage boutique feel.  I hope you’ll agree that I’ve managed to achieve that.  It’s really only been possible because I’ve a considerable cellar – and that’s where all the toys will be living for the next few days!  How on earth did I manage without a cellar before I moved here?

So, my clothes have been tagged and I’ve filled four clothes rails full of vintage dresses, blouses and skirts.  I’ve got a wicker basket overflowing with fabrics and another rail with vintage bags and t-shirts.  I honestly didn’t realise the amount of vintage I’d accumulated over the last few months so the clothes party is a going to be a great way of clearing out my stock to make way for more.  I can’t think of a better way to do it!

I’ve invited around twenty of my best girlfriends who in turn are bringing along a friend or two.  I can almost feel the excitement in the air!!!

I’ve lots of plans for the coming year and want to expand my business with the possiblity of opening a bricks and mortar shop too.  It’s all go in this household!

Wish me luck! oxoxo

Vintage is my Choice this Summer!

8 06 2009

Yay! I’m off to sunny Spain this August. So excited, because February 2008 was my last vacation ‘proper’, so it’s been a long time coming. I visited Cape Town back then and of course, it was very, very hot. I managed somehow. Let’s say I’m one of those ‘pale but interesting‘ types! I’m not particularly good in the baking-hot sun. After all, prickly-heat isn’t the best look is it?

Anyway, with time on my side, I’ve decided to get my summer wardrobe together. My plan is to look effortlessly cool and chic so I’ll just have to try and stay out of the sun as much as possible. Not easy in Southern Spain I know!

I’ve found lots of inspiration for my summer wardrobe on the worldwide web. There’s so much choice but my sights are set firmly on wearing vintage this summer. Who can deny the wide range of vintage available and the prices are definitely hard to beat.

I’ve selected a range of summer attire to wet your appetite. The first two sections are design labels and the second two are totally vintage. A complete list of merchandise and prices are noted below so do compare them and see what amazing choice you have when buying vintage.  All my vintage has been chosen from Etsy.com
